OBS troubleshooting

Dropped frames vs skipped frames: fix the right problem.

OBS uses similar-sounding warnings for different bottlenecks. Treating every frame issue like a bitrate problem wastes time. First identify whether the bottleneck is network, encoder, or GPU rendering.

If OBS says dropped frames

Start with the connection. Use Ethernet, lower video bitrate by 1000 kbps, stop cloud backups, and try a different ingest/server region.

If OBS says skipped frames

The encoder is falling behind. Switch to NVENC, Apple VT, QuickSync, or AMD hardware encoding when possible. If you are already using hardware encoding, lower FPS before lowering resolution.

If OBS says rendering lag

The scene is too heavy for smooth rendering. Cap game FPS, remove expensive animated overlays, reduce browser sources, and lower output resolution if needed.

Useful next step

Use the OBS Settings Wizard to produce a safer baseline, then record a 60-second test before going live.
