Why local recording beats waiting for platform VODs
The platform VOD is a mixed, compressed, single-audio-track video that arrives on the platform’s schedule and disappears on the platform’s schedule. The local recording is the version you own: full resolution, all audio tracks intact, ready to edit, re-upload, and archive.
Record locally in OBS on every stream. It costs disk space and nothing else. Platform outages, VOD mute decisions, and channel terminations can’t touch what’s already on your drive.
OBS recording settings that preserve quality
- Encoder: NVENC / Apple VT / QuickSync on the “quality” or higher preset. Your GPU encoder handles recording and streaming simultaneously at these settings.
- Rate control: CQP (quality-based) around 18-22 for crisp game footage, or CBR at roughly double your streaming bitrate if you want a more predictable file size.
- Format: MKV while recording (crash-safe), remuxed to MP4 afterwards with File → Remux Recordings.
- Audio tracks: enabled per the separate audio guide so editing can re-balance music and mic.
Save recordings to a dedicated drive or folder; a 1080p60 CQP-22 recording runs roughly 1-2 GB per hour.
The full-VOD workflow (YouTube first)
- Right after the stream ends (or the next morning), upload the local recording to YouTube as a normal video.
- Title it for search, not for your regulars: “[Game name] full playthrough — Part 4 (first stream)” beats “VOD from Tuesday.”
- Add a first-pinned comment with the highlight timestamp.
- Trim the dead first 2 minutes (or cut straight to the Starting Soon scene ending) with a simple editor — Shotcut and DaVinci Resolve free versions both work.
The YouTube upload doubles your archive surface: the platform VOD is where live viewers catch up, and the YouTube upload is where search-engine viewers arrive months later. This pairing is the reason streaming on YouTube Live with OBS is attractive for solo creators.
The highlights and shorts workflow
- During or after the stream, note the 3-6 moments that got chat moving (a clutch play, a joke, a reaction).
- Open the local recording, crop each moment to 30-60 seconds in an editor (CapCut, Premiere, Resolve all work).
- For vertical platforms (TikTok, Shorts, Reels), export a 9:16 version with the speaker’s face and captions at the top third, roughly where TikTok overlays nothing.
- Add a 1-line call to action and your handle in the caption, not burned into the frame.
Thirty seconds of vertical video generated from something you already broadcast is the highest leverage content format in streaming: it costs almost nothing to make and is what followers share.
Clipping platforms natively
- Twitch: clips are made from VODs by viewers and you; the Creator Dashboard’s “Highlights” also lets you cut permanent highlight reels from a VOD.
- Kick: short highlight clips from VODs, similar to Twitch but simpler.
- YouTube: “Start from clip” on your own video generates a shareable clip URL; use normal editing for shorts.
- TikTok Live: save your broadcast locally in OBS and edit vertical cuts; TikTok auto-clipping of live is limited.
A 20-minute routine for each stream
- Right after the stream (5 min): remux the MKV to MP4; back up the file if disk is tight; jot down your 3-6 highlight timestamps.
- Next morning (10 min): upload the full VOD to YouTube (or trim it roughly first if you hate the first two minutes).
- Anytime (5 min): produce one vertical highlight; post it where your audience lives.
Consistency beats effort. A stream, a VOD, and a short every week is a far more durable growth cadence than a burst of editing every third weekend.
Storage and archive tips
- Keep local VODs for 30-60 days; that’s enough for most editors and avoids filling the drive on a nomadic setup.
- Uploads are the real archive; disk copies are fallback.
- Name recordings by date and content, e.g.,
2026-09-14-eldenring-part4.mkv, so search doesn’t become archaeology. - Keep one highlights folder per game, so a future “best of” video is a matter of picking files.
