The 30-second answer
For most streamers on YouTube Live, the safe starter preset is:
- Encoder: NVENC (NVIDIA), Apple VT (mac), QuickSync (Intel), AMD HW H.264, or x264 veryfast on weak hardware.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Resolution / FPS: 1080p30 or 720p60.
- Video bitrate: 4500-6000 kbps for 1080p30, 6000-9000 kbps for 1080p60.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds.
- Audio bitrate: 160 kbps AAC.
If your upload cannot hold those bitrates with 30% headroom, drop to 720p30 at 2500-3500 kbps and step up once the lower preset is stable.
YouTube’s published bitrate ceilings
YouTube accepts a wide range of bitrates. The published guidance has shifted over time, so use these as upper bounds rather than targets. The bitrate you can sustain all stream is the bitrate you should use, not the ceiling.
- 1080p60: up to about 9000 kbps video.
- 1080p30: up to about 6000 kbps video.
- 720p60: up to about 6000 kbps video.
- 720p30: up to about 4000 kbps video.
The audio bitrate is a separate budget: 160 kbps AAC is a good default; you can go as low as 128 kbps without losing much, but going higher rarely helps.
YouTube channel settings can change, and some accounts (older channels, newly verified channels, or accounts flagged for review) may have different defaults. Confirm your current dashboard guidance before publishing a final preset.
Why 30% upload headroom matters
Speed tests report a snapshot. Real streaming is a long-running connection that has to hold for hours, sometimes through Wi-Fi, sometimes while other people in the house are using the network. A connection that tests at 10 Mbps in the morning might test at 6 Mbps in the evening; the bitrate you pick should fit the worst-case hour, not the best one.
Formula:
- Usable stream budget = upload speed × 0.70.
- Subtract audio bitrate to get the video bitrate ceiling.
Examples:
- 5 Mbps upload: about 3500 kbps usable, 3340 kbps video after 160 kbps audio.
- 8 Mbps upload: about 5600 kbps usable, 5440 kbps video.
- 10 Mbps upload: about 7000 kbps usable, 6840 kbps video.

Encoder: hardware first, x264 as fallback
YouTube Live ingests H.264 only. The right encoder choice is whatever hardware encoder your PC has:
- NVIDIA NVENC: on most GeForce GTX 10-series and newer GPUs. Pick NVENC H.264.
- Apple VT H.264 / VideoToolbox: on macOS, native on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs that support VideoToolbox.
- Intel QuickSync: on most modern Intel CPUs. Pick QuickSync H.264.
- AMD HW H.264: on most modern AMD APUs and GPUs.
- x264 veryfast: the software fallback if no hardware encoder is available. Picture quality is good but the CPU load is much higher; weak CPUs will struggle.
Hardware encoders free the CPU for the game and the rest of the stream. On a low-end PC, the encoder choice is the single biggest factor in whether the stream is stable. Read OBS settings for a low-end PC for the full ladder.
Keyframes, rate control, and audio: settings YouTube insists on
YouTube rejects streams that violate a few specific rules. The defaults in OBS handle most of them, but it is worth confirming:
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. Any other value risks YouTube re-encoding or rejecting the feed.
- Rate control: CBR. VBR works in most cases but CBR is the safer pick and matches what YouTube expects from OBS.
- Profile: High or Main. Baseline is technically accepted but rarely a good idea.
- Audio codec: AAC. YouTube does not accept MP3 in the ingest stream.
- Audio bitrate: 128-256 kbps. 160 kbps is the comfortable middle.
If a stream is mysteriously rejected on YouTube, these five settings are the first place to look.
Resolution and FPS: start safe, step up after a test
The right resolution is the highest resolution your upload and CPU can hold. The right FPS depends on what you are streaming:
- 720p60: a strong default for fast-paced games and most live content. Works on a 5-8 Mbps upload.
- 1080p30: looks sharp for slower content (just chatting, art, board games). Works on a 6-10 Mbps upload.
- 1080p60: the ceiling most streamers aim for. Needs 9-15 Mbps upload with 30% headroom.
- 1440p or 4K: YouTube accepts these, but viewers mostly watch on phones and laptops where the resolution difference is invisible. The bitrate cost rarely pays off for new streamers.
Set the canvas resolution to your monitor’s native size and the output (scaled) resolution to your stream resolution. A 1440p monitor streaming at 1080p means 2560x1440 base and 1920x1080 output.
Run a private test before going live
YouTube has three useful visibility options for a test:
- Unlisted: only people with the link can watch. Best for the first test.
- Private: only you and invitees. Useful for sharing a test VOD.
- Public: anyone can find and watch. Save this for the actual broadcast.
Click Start Streaming in OBS, watch the dock for dropped or skipped frames for 60 seconds, then check the YouTube Live Control Room to confirm the feed is healthy. Fix anything you find before you set the broadcast to public.
Troubleshooting tips specific to YouTube Live
- Stream key rejected: YouTube rotates stream keys occasionally, or you copied with an extra space. Re-paste the latest key from the Live Control Room.
- Feed looks great locally but blocky on YouTube: YouTube transcodes your stream for viewers on slower connections. The transcoder is doing its job; lowering your bitrate too far before sending is the only way to control how YouTube re-encodes.
- Stable stream then lag spike: usually network. Read dropped frames vs skipped frames and run the dropped frames troubleshooter.
- YouTube says the keyframe interval is wrong: confirm OBS is set to 2 seconds. A streaming software bug or a corrupted profile can reset it to 0; check the value, not the UI label.
